The night in Columbus when a guy froze mid bit and the whole room went quiet
Back in 2019 I drove up to Columbus for a comedy open mic at a bar off High Street. There was this guy doing a character bit that had blown up online, the kind where a clip gets 4 million views and suddenly everybody in the room knows the punchline before he says it. About 90 seconds in he just stopped. Someone in the back had already yelled the ending, and you could see him realize the crowd only came for that one moment. He finished the set flat and I never saw him around again. What stuck with me was how fast a room turns when the surprise is gone, like the joke was holding the whole thing up and once it fell, nothing was left. I stopped chasing whatever is blowing up that week and started going to smaller shows where nobody films anything. Did anybody else see that same guy try the bit again somewhere, or did he just call it quits?
