I finally tested that 'dub vs sub' advice from a stranger at a con

A guy in a Gundam hoodie told me last year that watching anime dubbed ruins the emotional impact, so I rewatched A Silent Voice with the dub after 3 tries. Honestly, the lip flaps lined up better and I cried at the same scenes, so is the 'purist' take actually just gatekeeping? Anyone else flip sides on this after a specific show?
