Spent $400 on a Silky Katanaboy 500 instead of a cheap $30 hand saw and now I can't decide if I'm smart or a sucker
I do mostly residential work around Cleveland and last spring I caved and bought a Silky Katanaboy 500 for about $400 with the sheath. For the first month I felt like a genius. It zipped through 8 inch limbs on a silver maple faster than my 261 with a sharp chain, and the pull stroke meant no fatigue in my forearm by 2pm. Then I loaned it to a ground guy for one afternoon and he bent the blade on a pinched cut, and a replacement blade runs $180 which is more than most guys spend on a whole saw setup. Half my crew thinks a $30 Fanno or a cheap Corona does 90 percent of the same work and if you break it you just grab another at the supply house. The other half says the speed and the clean cuts on ornamental pruning pay for it in a single high end job. I honestly can't tell if I got burned or if I just need to stop lending my gear out. Anyone else drop real money on one premium tool and end up torn on whether it was worth it?
