I finally stopped trusting dig site photos and started drawing everything by hand
Back in 2019 at a site near Tucson I would just snap 200 pictures of every trench and call it done, then spend nights squinting at blurry shots trying to figure out which layer was which. Now I sketch each profile on graph paper as we go, and last season it caught a thin ash lens at 40cm that never showed up in any photo. A retired field director named Walt showed me the trick and I laughed at him at first. Anyone else switched back to paper or am I just getting old?

Reminds me of a buddy who does underwater archaeology down in Florida. He spent a whole season taking GoPro footage of a wreck site and got nothing usable because of silt and bad light. Switched to drawing the hull plan on Mylar with a pencil taped to his wrist, and he found a second keel section nobody had seen in three prior surveys. Paper does not lie when the water is murky. Funny how the cheap old way keeps beating the expensive new way.
