PSA: Stacking my first Milky Way shot took me 7 weeks because of one dumb setting
I shot the core over Great Basin National Park back in June, 40 frames at 15 seconds each on a tripod I borrowed twice, and the first stack came out looking like wet mud. Half the astro crowd says just crank the ISO to 6400 and stack in DeepSkyStacker, the other half swears you shoot lower ISO and take way more subs. Turns out my real problem was leaving long exposure noise reduction on, which ate half my frames and made the stars soft. Which side are you on, fewer clean subs or a hundred noisy ones?

Great Basin in June is rough with that heat haze off the valley floor, so I gotta ask if the noise reduction was really the whole story. Seven weeks on one stack tells me the setting was a symptom, not the cause, because a normal person would've caught soft stars on frame 10 and just re-shot. Sounds like the hobby got its hooks in you more than the toggle did.
