PSA: Saw a wheel-off at the I-70 rest stop near Effingham last month and now I torque every car I touch
Guy lost his front wheel at 60 mph right in front of me, turns out a tire kid at some chain spot buzzed his lugs on with a impact and never checked them. I keep a torque wrench in my trunk now and hit 80 ft-lbs on my own ride every oil change, anyone else seen this happen way more than it should?
Torque wrenches are great and all but this feels like one of those things where the internet takes one bad story and turns it into a whole panic. Millions of tires get mounted every day with impacts and the vast majority of cars don't lose wheels on the highway. Tire shops use torque sticks for a reason, they get it close enough and it works fine for 99 percent of people. If a shop is really that careless you probably have bigger problems than whether you personally own a torque wrench. Not saying it never happens, but torquing your own lugs at every oil change won't save you from a guy who cross threads a nut or forgets to tighten one at all. Best thing is finding a shop you trust and letting them do their job, your mileage may vary though.
