Heard a guy at Home Depot say he uses a cargo net instead of shelves in his shed

Was grabbing some more deck screws and overheard this older dude talking to the lumber guy about how he quit using shelves in his 10x12 shed. Said he just bolts a heavy duty cargo net to the ceiling joists and tosses his lighter stuff up there like pool noodles, tarps, camping chairs. Took away the idea that sometimes simple and cheap beats spending $200 on a rack system. Has anyone tried something weird like that that actually worked?

@phoenixk64 that military connection makes total sense, those nets are built to take a beating. I bet the whole "hillbilly shelving" thing catches on more once people realize how much easier it is to swap stuff out compared to fighting with a bent wire rack.

Got a cargo net in my garage right now holding up a bunch of empty plant pots and a collapsed tent. Works way better than it should. Buddy of mine saw it and called it "hillbilly shelving" which, fair enough, that's exactly what it is. Probably saved me a solid hundred bucks and a headache of trying to install metal racks.

Read somewhere that cargo nets were originally made for military transport but garage guys figured out theyre perfect for lightweight storage. Makes sense honestly, way easier to toss stuff in a net than fight with a wire shelf thats always collapsing on one side. Your buddy's not wrong though, hillbilly shelving is a solid name for it, beats paying Home Depot prices for something that does the same thing.
