Rain barrel overflow ruined my shed corner last month

Set up a 50 gallon barrel off the downspout in June. Thought the overflow hose was fine pointing away. Last month we got 3 inches in one night. Woke up to the hose kinked and water pooling against the shed base. Bottom plate of the left wall is spongy now. Has anyone else had overflow line issues with rain barrels? Would a wider hose or a diverter valve fix this better?
