Warning: I counted my shed and hit 47 paint cans, which tells me I have a problem
I was cleaning out my 10x12 shed in Tucson two weekends ago and decided to line up every can of leftover paint on the driveway just to see how bad it was. The pile came to 47 cans, and only 6 of them still had a label I could read, which means I have been hauling the same dried up color around for three moves and two houses. How do you all deal with old paint, is there a drop off spot in your area that does not charge a fee per can?

I used to just stack old cans in the corner of the garage and tell myself I would use them someday. After reading your post I looked up my city's rules and found out we have a household waste site that takes paint for free on certain Saturdays. What changed my mind was learning that latex paint can actually be dried out with kitty litter or paint hardener and then tossed in the regular trash, as long as the lid is off. Oil based paint is the stuff you really have to take in, and most places that charge per can only charge for that kind. I had 20 cans taking up shelf space that could have gone out with the trash years ago. Now I only keep one can per color and write the room name on the lid with a sharpie.
