Thought a guy at the gym was nuts for saying we should deadlift barefoot, then I tried it on the platform in Reno
I used to post in here laughing at gym hot takes, especially the barefoot lifting crowd. Last month I was at a powerlifting gym in Reno and a guy told me my $140 squat shoes were messing up my setup. I rolled my eyes, but my back had been sore for about 3 weeks so I tried pulling in just socks. My bar path got straighter and the soreness went away after 2 sessions. Now I have to eat my words, but does this actually work for everyone or was I just lucky?
So your back felt better after two sessions and suddenly barefoot deadlifting is the fix for everyone? Come on man, you changed like three other things too. You were at a powerlifting gym in Reno instead of your normal spot, probably got better coaching cues, and your back had 3 weeks of rest before you pulled again. Of course it felt better. I've seen guys swear by barefoot, then swear by heeled shoes, then swear by wrestling shoes, all within a year. None of it means anything unless you test it over months with the same setup. If it works for you, cool, but that doesn't mean the $140 shoes were the problem.
