Bought a $12 oven thermometer after 3 years of blaming my oven, turns out my bakes were fine the whole time
My cookies kept coming out with burnt bottoms and raw middles so I figured my 15 year old oven was just toast and started hunting for a new one. Before dropping $800 on a replacement I grabbed a cheap oven thermometer at Walmart for $12 just to see how far off the dial was. Turns out the oven runs about 25 degrees hot but the real problem was I kept putting the rack on the bottom position which was way too close to the heating element. Moved the rack to the middle and my last batch of chocolate chip cookies came out perfect for the first time in months. Now I'm wondering how many other bakes I gave up on because of one dumb rack position, did anyone else figure out something this simple way too late?
