My mixer died mid-batch at 2 AM last Sunday

I was halfway through a triple batch of chocolate chip cookies for a bake sale when my KitchenAid started smoking and just stopped. Turns out the motor burnt out because I was running it too long on high speed. Any tips on fixing these things yourself or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

Did you check if the thermal fuse blew on it? That's the easiest fix and it costs like 5 bucks for a pack of them on Amazon. If not that, then the motor brushes might be totally gone and those are cheap too.

Huh, you're probably right about the fuse but hold up. A lot of people forget those newer dryer drums have a weird plastic rib that can break off and get stuck in the blower wheel, causing the motor to struggle and trip the thermal fuse over and over. Check the drum fins before you start swapping parts or you'll just be chasing the same problem.

@young.thomas brings up a good point but have you checked if the bowl lift mechanism is binding up at all?
