Just realized my fading technique was backwards for 4 years

I started cutting my neighbor's kid last week and he asked why his fade looked darker on top than bottom. Said his usual barber did it opposite. I've been doing dark to light, but he wanted light to dark. Turns out for his hair type, starting with the guard open and working down closed gives a smoother blend. I felt like an idiot after 4 years of doing it my old way. The tip off was his old haircut photos from 6 months ago. Anyone else switch their fade direction based on the client's cowlick pattern?
