My lease has a clause about "reasonable wear" and my landlord tried to charge me $1,400 for carpet
So I moved out of my place in Cleveland last month and got my deposit letter back with $1,400 taken out for carpet replacement. I pulled out my copy of the lease and there's a line that says normal wear and tear is not my problem, but the landlord claims 5 years of foot traffic counts as damage. A buddy who works in property management told me that in most states carpet has a set useful life, like 5 to 7 years, and after that the landlord can't stick you with the full cost. I wrote back citing the clause word for word and asked for the carpet's install date. Now they're suddenly offering to settle for $300. Has anybody actually won one of these deposit fights, or do they just wear you down until you take the deal?
