My tile guy told me I was using the wrong grout for a wet shower floor

Switched to epoxy grout after he pointed out how cement-based stuff soaks up moisture and stains in like 6 months - has anyone else had issues with grout cracking in a steam shower?

Watched a buddy's steam shower grout turn into a crumbly mess inside a year. Cement grout just can't handle the constant moisture and heat cycling in a steam enclosure. Epoxy is the only way to go for that application, it's basically plastic once cured and doesn't care about water at all. The cracking comes from the grout shrinking and expanding with temperature changes, and cement grout just isn't flexible enough for that kind of abuse. You made the right call switching over.

So does epoxy actually hold up better with the heat cycling in a steam shower? I switched to epoxy after my tile guy warned me too, and it's been solid for about a year now. No cracks or stains yet, even with my wife taking 40 minute steams every day. Cement grout just can't handle that constant moisture and temperature change. It's like trying to use paper towels in a flood.

40 minutes? I'd need a snorkel after that, not epoxy grout.
