I thought Prince was untouchable until my uncle played me 6 songs in a row at a cookout in Akron and I couldn't hum one
I used to nod along whenever anybody called Prince a genius, mostly because I didn't want to look dumb in front of music snobs. Then at a family cookout in Akron last August my uncle queued up six of his tracks in a row and I swear I could not hum a single one back. Half the crowd says that just means he was too deep for casual fans, but the other half says a real legend writes stuff that sticks in your head without homework. Was I wrong for 20 years or is the hype machine just louder than the songs? What is the one Prince track that actually proves the case, because I honestly want to hear it.
Six songs and not one stuck? That says more about the six songs than about Prince honestly. I could hum When Doves Cry or Let's Go Crazy after one listen as a kid, so it's not like the guy never wrote a hook. But I also don't get why people act like not loving him is some kind of crime. Some of it is just hype doing its thing and the cookout crowd turning it into a test you can fail. If you want the one track that proves the case, put on Kiss and tell me that one doesn't stick.
