My boss handed me a coffee can of loose bearings and said count them. 1,247.
So I'm the shop kid at a co-op in Portland and my main job is rebuilding old hubs. My boss dropped this coffee can on my bench last Tuesday, full of loose ball bearings from like a decade of wheel rebuilds. He said count them before I can touch a wheel again. I figured maybe 400, tops. It took me two evenings after closing and I got to 1,247. What surprised me wasn't the number itself, it was that when I dumped them out on a tray and sorted by size with a caliper, I found four oddballs mixed in, a 5/32 in a pile of 3/16 and three that were pitted so bad they were basically gravel. They were spreading little scratches into every hub they touched. I bagged each size in labeled ziplocks and now the can lives on the shelf with a sharpie note on the lid. Any of you keep a junk bearing can around, or do you just toss and buy fresh every rebuild?
