I thought the old coal forge trick was total junk until I tried it at my shop in Akron
About four months ago an older guy named Walt stopped by my garage shop in Akron and told me I was wasting fuel by leaving my coal piled too high before I even lit it. I figured he was just being nosy since he had not touched a forge in maybe 20 years. He showed me how to bank the coal around the edges and keep the center shallow so the fire climbs slow and hot instead of smothering. First try I burned through a whole bucket in under two hours and got nothing but clinker, so I almost gave up on it. Then I gave it one more shot the next weekend and managed to hold a welding heat on a rail spike for almost six minutes without touching the blower once. Now I bank my coal that same way every single session and I use way less fuel, maybe a third less than before. Walt never charged me a dime for that tip, he just drank my coffee and left. Curious if anyone else was taught this same banking method or if it is just a regional thing around northeast Ohio.
