Rant: took me 8 months to figure out why my tongs kept twisting

Honestly, I thought my tongs were junk or my steel was bad. Every time I grabbed a hot billet, the jaws would rotate a few degrees and I'd end up fighting the piece the whole time. I tried different hinge pins, tighter rivets, even switched to a shorter handle set. Turns out the issue was my hammer technique, I was striking off-center near the rein and torqueing the whole tool sideways. It took 8 months of frustration before a guy at a demo in Ohio pointed it out in about 30 seconds. Anyone else had a basic tool problem that was actually your own habit the whole time?
