Vent: people keep quenching 1084 in oil when it wants water

Had a guy bring me a knife last week, 1084 steel, edge rolled over on him skinning a deer. He swore he did everything right. Asked what he quenched in. Canola oil, warmed to 130. That's your problem right there. 1084 is a shallow hardening steel and it needs a fast quench. Brine or plain water will get it hard every time. Oil is too slow for that alloy unless you go to a thin fast oil and even then it's iffy. He re heat treated with water and it skated a file. Here is how I check, heat to non magnetic, let it soak just a touch past that, quench in room temp brine and watch for the scale to pop. If it does not harden you either got it too cool or your water got too warm. Anyone else seeing this with the newer guys or is it just around here?
