Swapped my oxy rig for a plasma cutter on pipe prep and I aint looking back
Used to run a rosebud torch for years on 2 inch schedule 80 in the refineries around Baton Rouge. Cutting a nozzle hole meant dragging leads, preheating till the steel sweated, and then grinding slag for another twenty minutes. The crew I worked with in 2019 swore oxy was the only way because of the heat treat concerns. Last spring I finally got my hands on a Hypertherm 30XP and tried it on a header replacement. Clean cut in under 90 seconds, no slag, and my grinder barely got touched. The kerf is a bit narrower so my fit up tolerances tightened, but honestly I got used to that in about a week. Anyone else make the switch and deal with the arc gouge cleanup differently, or am I the only one who still keeps a torch around for thick plate?
