The cashier at Kroger who called my book club pick 'depressing' and then made a valid point
She said she quit a book club 3 years ago because every pick was about grief or war, and after I argued that those are 'important stories', she asked why we never pick anything that's just fun to read, so is there a line between meaningful and miserable, or do we owe it to ourselves to balance the sad stuff with something lighter?

Three books in a row about cancer was my breaking point. I told my group we needed a palate cleanser and got side-eyed like I was being shallow. Now we do every other month as a junk food pick, and honestly the serious ones hit harder when we're not drowning in misery. That cashier was right, balance is the whole game.

Palate cleanser" is the perfect way to put it. We did three heavy books in a row once and I skipped two meetings because I just couldn't deal. Now we mix in a thriller or a comedy every other pick and nobody feels guilty about it. The serious ones actually stick with you more when you're not burnt out. That cashier basically figured out what most book clubs learn the hard way.
