My press snapped a brand new text block, I'm still not over it
I was in my garage shop on Tuesday tightening the press on a 400 page novel I had just sewn up, and the wooden jaw cracked right down the middle, sending the whole book flying into my tool shelf. A chip of wood gouged the spine badly and I had to rip out the sections and start the sewing over from scratch, which took another three hours. Has anyone else had a press fail on them mid-tighten, or should I just switch to a metal one for good?

Man, that stinks! A buddy of mine had the same thing happen with an old cast iron press he got at a yard sale. He was tightening it down on a thick journal and the whole top plate just sheared off, and the book shot across the room like a rocket, denting his drywall. He ended up gluing the pieces back together with some heavy duty epoxy and clamping it for a day, and it's worked fine ever since. But honestly, I don't blame you for eyeballing a metal one after that, that's a scary way to lose three hours of work. What kind of wood was the jaw made of?
