Switched from PVA to wheat paste on my last rebind and the spine barely moved
I did a full rebind on a 1940s dictionary for a coworker at the shop in Dayton and I had to pick between my usual PVA and a cooked wheat paste for the spine glue up. I went with the paste because the book weighed about 4 pounds and I wanted more open time to line everything up. It took way longer to dry, like a full day under weight, but the hinge flexes clean now and there is no crackle when you open it. PVA would have grabbed in about 30 seconds and I know I would have rushed the headbands. Anyone here use paste on heavy books or do you just thin out the PVA and deal with the fast set?

Paste on a four pound book just means you're waiting forever for a spine that creeps anyway.
