The typing indicator in Facebook Dating gave away 3 bots in one evening, but response time gave away the real people
I tested two things on Facebook Dating over the weekend: how fast someone replies and whether the little typing bubble shows up before the message. Every account that replied in under 2 seconds with a perfect paragraph never showed a typing indicator, and 3 of them sent the same "hey handsome, how is your day going" line word for word. The real people took 40 seconds to 5 minutes and the bubble popped up and disappeared a few times like a normal person thinking. If you want to try it yourself, watch the gap between opening the chat and the first reply, not the words. What other timing tricks have you all used to catch these things?
The typing bubble thing is spot on. I read a post from a guy who did a similar test and he said the bots almost never trigger the bubble because they just dump the whole message at once, no thinking time at all. He also tracked how long it took them to view his profile after a match, and the fake ones viewed it in like 1 or 2 seconds every single time, which is way too fast for a person to actually read anything. Real accounts took anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes before they even opened it.
