That $20 hinge jig cost me a full afternoon of do-overs
Picked up a cheap hinge jig last month for a set of 12 cabinet doors in Spokane, and the bushing wore down so fast that every third hole came out crooked. After shimming three doors and still hearing that awful scrape on the frame, I tossed it and marked all the hinge spots by hand with a chisel and a center punch. Anyone else found a reasonable jig that actually holds up past one project, or is hand layout just the honest way to go?

My first thought is that nobody seems to blame the screws. Cheap jigs flex, sure, but I’ve had more crooked holes from cheap Phillips heads caming out under pressure, and that throws the whole bushing path off. I started drilling a tiny pilot hole with a 1/16” bit through the jig first, then running the bigger bit, and my do-over count dropped by half. Might be worth testing on scrap before you give up on the jig idea entirely.
