My tent rating flipped after one rainy night in Oregon

I spent 2 years telling people a $90 tent from Big 5 was all you needed. Then last June I camped near Crater Lake and woke up in a puddle because the bathtub floor seam let water through. That one night made me re-read every review I'd ever ignored about seam taping and hydrostatic head ratings. Now I'm torn between saying reviews are useful or just fear-driven hype. Has anyone else jumped sides on a gear opinion after a single bad trip, and did you go back to your old view later?
