Why does nobody talk about how a guy at a Portland REI talked me out of buying a $400 tent?
Honestly, I walked into the REI on NW 14th in Portland last August ready to drop $400 on a two-person backpacking tent because my old one leaked. This guy named Marcus asked where I camp and how often. I said maybe 4 trips a year, mostly car camping with one overnight hike. He told me straight up, 'You don't need this, you need a $120 tarp setup and better stakes.' I was kinda mad at first but he was right. Has anyone else had a store employee actually save them money instead of upsell them?
Read a piece on how REI trains staff to ask about your actual trips before pointing at a price tag, and it sounds like Marcus followed that playbook to a T. Their workers get spiffs and dividends either way, so the good ones figure a happy camper comes back more than a one-time big sale helps. The bad ones just see you as a wallet with legs. Portland seems to have a solid batch of the good ones.
