Appreciation post: my roommate showed me how to check if an apology is real using just a search tool and a date range
Last year my roommate got into it with a guy from her old job who posted this long apology on Instagram after some stuff from 2018 came back up, and she kept going back and forth on whether to believe him. I told her to try something I stumbled into by accident. Instead of reading the apology, I told her to search his old account for the same phrases he used back when the original thing happened. Took me like 40 minutes with an archive site and a date filter, but the pattern was wild, he used the exact same "I've grown so much" line in 2018 about a totally different thing. Now I do this every time some public figure drops an apology, I go look at what they actually said before, not after. The gap between the old words and the new ones tells you almost everything. Anyone else got a method for sorting a real apology from a repackaged one, or am I overthinking it with the archive thing?

My aunt does something kind of similar but with wedding videos, weirdly enough. She got burned by a guy who gave this big tearful speech at his own wedding about how he was done with his wild past, and then like two years later she found his first wedding video from a totally different woman with almost the same speech word for word. Down to the part about his mom. So now she watches old videos of anybody before she trusts a big emotional moment from them. Your archive thing and her video thing are basically the same idea, just different tools. People really do have a script and they just run it again on a new audience.
