My uncle told me at a BBQ in Toledo last month that he turned down a promotion twice and never once felt behind
He said he watched two guys above him get laid off in 2009 while he kept his same desk for 22 years, and now I keep looking at my own offer letter thinking about whether climbing is really the point, so how do you all decide when a bigger title is actually worth it
Watched my neighbor do something kinda similar with his house. Dude has lived in the same little two bedroom since like 1998 while everyone on the block kept trading up and adding additions, and he just rewired the garage and put in a garden instead. His reasoning was he already knew where all the squeaky floorboards were. That always stuck with me more than any advice about careers. Maybe the real question is whether you'd rather learn a new house or just know your own really well.
