Rant: My boss in Chicago gave me a project on Friday that needed to be done by Monday morning.

I spent my whole weekend working on it, only for him to say on Monday he changed his mind about the whole approach... has anyone else had a manager pull something like this right before a deadline?

My old manager in Phoenix did that three times in one month. I finally printed out his original email with the instructions and brought it to our one-on-one meeting. He got real quiet and said he would try to be more clear, but the habit never really changed. It made me feel like my personal time meant nothing to him. I learned to keep a paper trail after that.

Ugh that's the worst. I started sending quick check-in emails on Friday afternoons now, just to confirm the plan. What did you end up doing with all the work you finished?

Save everything you finish in a separate folder with the date in the file name. When they come back asking for the "original" work, you can send that folder right back and ask which version they want. It forces them to admit they changed their mind, and it saves you from redoing stuff from scratch.
