I finally figured out why my electric bill dropped after I stopped mowing my lawn

Honestly, it was last summer in Phoenix when I just got too busy to mow for like three weeks. The grass went brown and tall, but my bill went down by almost $40. Tbh, I thought it was a mistake at first. Then I realized my AC wasn't running as much because the longer grass and dead patches were actually shading the soil right around the house foundation. It kept the ground cooler, so the house stayed cooler too. I looked it up and found out they call it 'climate-scaping' or something, using your yard to help with temps. Now I leave a big section wild on the west side of the house. Has anyone else tried something like this, maybe with different plants?

Ever thought about using rocks or gravel on the sunny side? I did a strip of that and it reflects heat away from the house.

Wow, that's actually brilliant. I let my clover take over and it does the same thing, keeps the soil way cooler. Nature's free AC is the best kind.

Yeah nature's free AC is a good way to put it. I've even started mixing in some creeping thyme in the really dry spots, works just as well.
