Unpopular opinion: new guys worry too much about feeds and speeds and not enough about setup
Had a kid fresh out of tech school last month at our plant in Akron who spent 45 minutes on the calculator punching numbers for a simple facing pass on 6061, and the part still came out tapered because he never checked if the vise was dialed in. I've run the same Haas VF-2 for 11 years and I can count on one hand the times a job went bad from a wrong feed number, but I've lost track of how many got scrapped from a loose jaw or chips under a parallel. The math gets you close, the setup gets you parts. What's the first thing you check before hitting cycle start on a job you've never run before?
