I stopped asking for recommendations at the counter after he handed me a beat up copy of Marvel Premiere #47 last month and said the stuff nobody pulls is where the real finds hide, and now I want to know if anyone else has a shop owner who pushes them toward the dusty long boxes instead of the new wall.
That whole thing about the beat up copy of Marvel Premiere #47 is spot on, because those dusty boxes are where the actual good stuff lives. My guy in Portland does the same thing, he'll wave me off the new wall and point at the dollar bins in the back corner every single time. The trick is you gotta go in with a plan or you'll just stand there staring at 30 years of X-Men. Pick two or three runs you actually care about and dig those letters only, otherwise the 20 minutes turns into two hours fast. Also bring a short box or a bag because once you find stuff you didn't know you needed, your hands get full quick. And check the condition on the spine before you get excited, some of those long box gems are beat to hell and back.
