The guy at my LCS who narrated my pull list like a sports announcer

Last Saturday at Graham Cracker Comics in Naperville, this regular in his 50s watched me grab my weekly stack and started calling every issue like it was a horse race, yelling stuff like 'And X-Men rounds the corner with a surprise variant!' while I'm just trying to pay for a $23 haul. He did this for a full minute, even added sound effects when I dropped a quarter on the counter, and the clerk was laughing so hard she forgot to ring up my bag. Has anyone else gotten an unsolicited running commentary from a fellow fan, or did I stumble into some kind of comic shop improv night?

That sort of thing happens more than you might think, but usually it is a way for a lonely person to connect. The guy probably has no one else to talk comics with at home or work, and that little routine is his way of feeling like part of the shop's community. Maybe it is annoying when you just want to grab your books and go, but it sounds harmless and even kind of sweet once you step back. The clerk laughing probably made his whole week, too, because he got to be the funny one for a minute. If it truly bothers you, a polite nod and turning away usually sends the message without making a scene. Just be glad he is not narrating your pull list like a sad documentary, because that would be a whole different problem.
