Vent: my buddy said I only like comics for the movies and it's been bugging me for 3 days
So last Saturday I'm at my local shop in Sacramento for FCBD and my buddy Dave, who has been reading since he was like 11, looks at my pull list and goes 'you only get the stuff that might be a show someday.' I laughed it off at first but then I kept thinking about it on the drive home and honestly he's kind of right and it bugs me. I've got like 4 books on my list and 3 of them either have a show or a movie coming, and the one that doesn't I grabbed because the cover looked cool. The thing is, does it matter why I got into it? I started reading Invincible after the show and it got me hooked on the whole story, and now I read way more than I did 2 years ago. But Dave's comment made me feel like I'm doing comics wrong or something, like I skipped the line. Has anyone else had someone in their shop make them feel like a fake fan just because they came in through the screen door?
Why does it matter how someone finds a book? Your Dave sounds like the kind of guy who thinks you have to earn comics by suffering through the floppy single issues in 1993 or something. Invincible is a perfect example, the show got tons of people to read that whole run and most of them now know way more about it than folks who just watched. Comics have been adapting to movies and TV for decades, Batman '89 sent people to shops, the X-Men cartoon did the same thing. Coming in through the screen door is still coming in, and if you're buying books and reading them, you're a real fan no matter what got you there.
