Walked into a restored 1880s warehouse in Denver and saw the workers using iPads with LiDAR to map beam rot
They were scanning the whole ceiling in 5 minutes while I stood there with a tape measure and a notepad like a caveman. Has anyone else had a project make you feel instantly outdated?

A buddy of mine does historical preservation work and told me a similar story. He spent three days on a ladder in an old church, tapping beams with a hammer and checking for soft spots by hand. They brought in a guy with one of those LiDAR iPads and he found a section of hidden dry rot behind some decorative plaster in about twenty minutes. My friend said he felt like he'd been doing archaeology with a shovel while someone else had ground-penetrating radar. It's impressive how far the tools have come, but also a little humbling when you realize how much time you used to spend on things that can now be done in a coffee break.

Read an article recently about how these scanners can detect moisture and rot that the human eye completely misses. Sounds like a massive time saver compared to climbing ladders with a flashlight.

Hold up, three days on a ladder tapping beams with a hammer? That's INSANE. I can't believe people used to do that kind of stuff the HARD way.
