I gave my writers group a prompt with only 3 words and got 40 pages of pure chaos
Last month I ran a little experiment with my Tuesday writers group here in Boise. Instead of our usual page long prompt full of details, I handed out one card that just said 'the key breaks.' That was it. No genre, no character, no setting, nothing. I figured half the group would groan and write 300 words about a door and we'd be done in an hour. What actually happened was wild. One guy wrote a 12 page story about a locksmith in 1970s Detroit, another person turned it into a breakup scene on a bus, and my own piece ended up being a sci fi thing about a prison moon. Nobody wrote the same story. I think the extra detail I usually give is actually me doing the work for them and killing the weird stuff before it shows up. Now I want to try prompts with even fewer words. Has anyone here run a super short prompt with their group, and did it go the same way for you?
