I paid a $75 credit repair company to fix my rental application, and I just found out I could have done it free
Six months ago I was trying to rent a place near Aurora and my credit score was sitting at 548. Every landlord I talked to wanted a co-signer or an extra deposit, so I paid a company $75 a month to dispute stuff on my report. They sent me a nice binder and a welcome call, and I felt like I was finally doing something about it. Then a housing counselor at a free clinic in Denver pulled my report and showed me the exact same dispute letters I could file myself online in about 20 minutes. The company had been charging me for mailing letters I could send free, and two of the accounts they disputed were already past the reporting window anyway. I canceled after 4 months and did the rest on my own, and my score went from 548 to 631 by the time I signed a lease. If you're paying someone monthly to fix your credit for a rental, have you ever sat down and added up what you actually got for that money?
Small correction, but disputing stuff yourself only really works for wrong info, not for legit late payments or old debts. The $75 a month places mostly just mail those same letters, so yeah you got overcharged, but the real win came from you doing the work and being patient. Six months of DIY effort is what moved that score, not some magic service.
