Walked past my old landlord's office on 5th and saw the sign in the window, and it hit me how much the game has changed
I was in my old neighborhood last Saturday picking up a truck part from a guy off Craigslist, and I drove past the little office where I used to drop off my rent check back in 2016. Same building, same squeaky screen door, but now there's a sign taped up that says they do credit repair help for people trying to buy. Ten years ago that office was the reason my credit was wrecked in the first place, because they'd report a late payment over 3 days like clockwork, and I never once thought to actually check what was on my report. Back then I was paying $850 a month for a place with a window AC unit that barely worked, and I didn't know a single person who'd ever pulled their own credit file, let alone fought something on it. Now half the folks I know have some story about disputing a collections account or working with a housing counselor to get their score up before applying for a mortgage. I sat in my truck for a minute just staring at that sign, thinking about how my buddy Marcus got turned down for a rental in 2018 over a $60 medical bill that wasn't even his, and how he'd probably have a totally different outcome today. Anyone else notice old rental offices and property managers suddenly acting like they're on your side about credit now, or is that just my neighborhood?
