I walked out of the food court at Rolling Acres Mall when the last pretzel place refused to sell me a stale one at 10am
Everyone says you should be nice to the last stores hanging on in a dead mall, but I think that gets it backwards. I was in Akron last Saturday at Rolling Acres, the food court is down to one pretzel stand and a lady working alone behind the counter. I asked for two plain pretzels and she said they were from Friday and she would not sell them to me, which I thought was strange because there were maybe 40 bags of them. I pushed a little, said I did not care if they were old, and she just said no and turned the sign around. So I went and sat on a bench for 20 minutes and watched, and in that whole time not one person walked up to that counter. She was probably right to keep the fresh ones for whoever actually shows, and I was the one being weird about it. Now I want to know, has anyone else had a dead mall store just flat out refuse their money over something small like that?

The part about her turning the sign around really got me. I used to be on the other side of this, figured if a place is dying they should be happy to take whatever cash walks in the door. Then I stood in a nearly empty mall in Ohio myself and watched a guy at a cookie place toss a whole tray because they were a day old, and it hit me that the person behind the counter still has to answer to somebody, even if that somebody is just the owner checking the books from home. She probably did not want your two bucks bad enough to risk the one guy who might come back later.
