Dropped $89 on a pin tester after a TikTok said my outlets were frying my phone, here is what I found
About 5 months back I kept seeing clips saying dirty power in old houses fries your phone battery and your appliances, and my place here in Cleveland was built in 1958 so I got spooked. I grabbed a little plug in tester plus a cheap multimeter for $89 total because I wanted to catch the outlet in my kitchen that my phone charger lives on. First reading came back at 121 volts, dead normal, and the ground was fine, so I felt dumb for a minute. Then I tested the outlet behind my couch and it read open ground, which is a real thing that clip never even talked about. Turned out one outlet had a loose neutral too, and my landlord got an electrician out for $140 to fix both. The viral claim about my phone was junk, but the tester found an actual hazard the video skipped right over. So I guess my question is, has anyone else bought a tool because of a scary clip and ended up finding a totally different problem with it?
