I thought that viral "hidden gems of Detroit" post was staged, then I drove past the Heidelberg Project myself
My wife sent me one of those viral threads about underrated spots in Detroit last weekend, and I rolled my eyes because half the pictures looked too perfect to be real. We ended up driving up to Detroit on Saturday to visit her sister in the East Side, and on the way back we took Mount Elliott just to see what was there. The second I saw the Heidelberg Project with my own eyes, I realized the photos people share are actually underselling it. There is a whole block of houses painted in wild colors with stuffed animals nailed to the walls and old shoes covering a tree, and it has been sitting there since 1986. What got me was the sign boards explaining the numbers, his art is about the houses that got torn down around him, one every few feet for years. I had spent a good hour before that drive reading comments saying it was a fake tourist trap, and none of those people had ever stood in front of it. Now I want to know from folks who live nearby, is it still worth a trip this summer or has the city torn more of it down since I went?
