A fake news clip about my hometown in Yakima got 200k views, and locals caught it in a day
The faker used old footage of a different downtown, but the giveaway was a store sign that closed in 2019. What's your go-to tell when the fake is a place you actually know?
Funny thing is my "expert eye" for fake local news is mostly just me yelling at my phone that the Taco Time sign is on the wrong side of the street. My small town superpower is knowing which buildings got torn down and which ones just got a new paint job, so a rando clip with the old Blockbuster still standing would trip my alarm instantly. Honestly the dead giveaway for me is the little stuff nobody would fake on purpose, like a gas station sign with the wrong price or a road that got a roundabout five years back. Wild that it only took locals a single day to sniff it out, but that tracks, we stare at the same twelve blocks our whole lives whether we want to or not.
