My dad said he doesn't trust any video of a politician from the last five years
We were watching the news at his place in Phoenix and a clip came on, and he just shut it off and said that. It made me realize I've gotten so used to looking for the little signs, like weird ear edges or blinking, that I forgot how it feels to just give up on trusting your own eyes. How do you explain to someone who's already checked out that learning to spot the fakes is actually the way back in?

Remember my old neighbor who refused to use online banking, like at all. He would drive across town to pay bills in person. One day I sat with him and just showed him how the lock icon worked in the browser, the simple stuff. He still drives sometimes, but now he checks his balance online. It wasn't about making him trust the whole system, just showing him one real thing he could check for himself. Sometimes you have to point at the lock on the door before someone will believe the house isn't just a painted backdrop.

My uncle in Tucson does the same thing with the TV remote. It feels like giving up is the only power we have left sometimes. How do you even start that talk about looking closer instead of looking away?
