Duct tape on my swamp cooler line, a handyman in Tucson was right
My neighbor Rick, who fixes swamp coolers for a living, told me to wrap the float valve connection with duct tape before the monsoon season, and I laughed at him because it sounded so janky. Two weeks later, a leak soaked my utility room floor and warped the particleboard shelf, so I tried his tape trick and it held perfectly through 4 rainstorms. Has anyone else gotten low-tech fixes from old timers that beat the expensive repair parts?

Wrap the tape clockwise or counterclockwise though? Because Rick probably knows the water pressure pushes one way and if you go the wrong direction it peels up in a week. Did he say anything about scuffing the pipe first with sandpaper so the adhesive actually bites? I've seen guys use that stretchy self-fusing silicone tape instead and swear it outlasts duct tape by years in the heat. Also how tight did you crank the float valve after taping, because over-tightening is what cracks those cheap plastic fittings in the first place. Give me the play by play so I don't have to learn this the way you did with the warped shelf.
