The tiny 10-gallon gray water tank under my Tucson sink was the shocker

I found out from the county permit office that desert code here only requires a 10-gallon tank for that setup, but my neighbor's 40-year-old house uses an illegal drip line, so who's actually following the rules, and did anyone else get a surprise when they pulled a permit for a kitchen redo?

That little tank is the least of your worries honestly. What matters is what the GROUND does under your house after years of that drip line. A leak that goes unnoticed for a decade can wash out the soil underneath your slab and that becomes a foundation repair that costs more than your whole kitchen redo. The permit guys have their codes but they don't test what the dirt is doing. My advice is to check your neighbor's water bill against yours. If theirs is way lower with the same size household, that drip line is working TOO well and it's going somewhere it shouldn't.
