PSA: I found out that taping drywall joints wrong can cost you a whole afternoon in rework

I was reading a forum post from a guy in Denver who said most people skip the mudding step on the tapered edges of boards and just go straight to flat joints. I tried it on a small closet job here in Phoenix and had to sand for an extra hour because the paper edges bubbled up from being too wet. Turns out that pre-filling the tapered gaps with a thin layer of mud before taping actually saves time in the long run. Has anyone else learned a simple trick like this that seems backwards but really works?

Ha! No way, I gotta push back on this one. I've been hanging and taping here in Tucson for like six years now and I never pre-fill anything. My trick is just to skim the tape with a real thin coat first, then let it sit for a minute before I press it in with a 6 inch knife. Saves me a whole step and I've never seen bubbling unless the mud is old and chunky. Honestly, I think the pre-fill thing is just extra work that makes you feel productive lol. If your surface is clean and your mud is fresh, the tape will bite just fine.

Are you sure it wasn't just a moisture issue from Phoenix air? Ngl, I've skipped pre-filling on dozens of jobs and never had bubbling problems when I just wet the tape right.

Funny timing on this. I actually heard a guy from one of the big tape companies talking about this at a supplier meeting a few months back. He said pre-filling is usually more about making sure the tape has something to bite into, especially when the compound is old or the floor has been power washed a bunch. Dust and residue from the dryback can mess with adhesion way more than moisture in my experience. Your trick with wetting the tape might work fine most of the time, but I've seen some brutal failures where tape just peeled right up because the surface was too slick or dusty underneath. A little extra prep feels like cheap insurance to me, even if it only saves you one callback out of fifty.
