That barn find from 2018 taught me to check for rot first
I drove three hours to a farm outside Boise to look at an old table someone was giving away for free. Turned out the legs were solid but the top had water damage so bad you could poke a finger through it. I spent the whole ride back thinking about how I should have asked for more pictures. Now I always make sellers send me close ups of joints and edges before I even pack my truck.

Pulled a chair out of a shed once that looked perfect in the listing, but when I got it home and set it in the sun, the whole thing just started crumbling, like it had been held together by dust and dreams. Turns out woodworms had hollowed out every single leg from the inside, you could tap it and hear nothing solid. Now I knock on everything before I load it up, like I'm some kind of furniture doctor checking for pneumonia. Ended up keeping the chair anyway, propped it up in the corner of my shop as a reminder to never trust a good photo from a bad angle.

You ever had something like that totally change your whole approach to buying stuff? I used to think asking for extra pictures was kind of annoying but after getting burned on a dresser that looked fine from the front but had all the back panel rotted out, I totally get it now. It just takes one bad experience to make you way more careful. Now I always ask for specific close ups of corners and underneath before I even get in the car. It saves so much time and gas money.
