Noticed my dims were off by 3/16 on a stair stringer, traced it back to my tape hook
Last Tuesday in my shop I was laying out a stringer for a split-level in Aurora and kept landing 3/16 short on every rise. Turned out the hook on my 25 foot Stanley tape had bent inward from dropping it on concrete, so it was pulling false measurements on every pull. Anyone else ever had a tape hook throw off their math, and do you just replace the tape or bend it back with pliers?

Dropping a tape on concrete is a CLASSIC way to mess up that hook. Bending it back works for a quick fix but it never holds true, I just buy a new one before the next big job. You can check it fast by hooking it on a straight edge and pulling a few times to see if the measurement creeps.
